Currants is Matt Hettich (violin), Brendan Carn (bass / guitar), and Eric Heep (cello). In the summer of 2026, Luna Galassini asked me if my group could play during the Currents art & technology festival, and at the time I was obsessed with the Zuni Cafe roast chicken salad (which has currants), so we named the group Currants. I made the salad for the show which was a big hit. There's something about communal eating that elevates experimental music.
We meet up occasionally and set some loose rules around a session, complain about work, and then play for a few hours. Here's a rehearsal from the summertime, it's pretty good; I try to record everything we do. We weren't particularly aiming for anything here, I think we had just finished talking about how healing can radically age a person.
Sometimes we play with Emmanuelle John who creates these spellbinding visuals with her microscope. She creates these hidden worlds by using hot glue and fiber and microscope slides. When she joins, we're then known as Something About Seeds. On the left is a nice video from my home in Santa Fe.
It's funny how these types of nights are the most memorable for a year. The windows are open, the neighbors are having their weekly gathering, we're unwinding after work and figuring out our lives. And then at some point we shut up and listen and watch each other for about an hour.
My tone is getting better in this one; Brendan is so fucking talented and playing cool guitar stuff. Emmanuelle is flowing with her slides; Matt is working through textures. It's a shame we're all scattered right now because of our work.
And here's a video of a performance we had just before I left for Los Angeles. Brendan couldn't make this one, sadly, so me and Matt used a lot more pedals than normal. I think it was recorded on Emmanuelle's laptop microphone and surprisingly sounds pretty good.
We'll get back to it soon enough, I hope.
